9th... Talk to me

Postby Warren0101 » Mon Nov 09, 2015 9:55 pm

Alright chaps.

After taking a break from the game due to the end times and this AoS stuff ive been keen to get back to playing abit more competitively again. Seems the WHFB is buying into the idea of 9th. After all 8th was a great game just needed more balance. Hence the reason for comp and the magic needed reworking to stop those 6 dice monkeys (hides face) which is essentially what they have done. I love the idea its being managed by the scene. I'm keen to see how it pans out.

Now ive read the rules and I cant see that much has changed. I noticed about setting up and turns etc, the reworked magic phase and ofcourse new books but has much changed with the rules apart from this? I haven't seen much from skimming but no doubt I have missed things!

Has anyone played much?

Be good to hear what yo think.

Thanks
Warren

There are lots of changes to the special rules - definitely worth reading them carefully.

The groups responsible for writing the books had goals set for them by the rules committee. One of those rules was to make each unit viable in the game, so there shouldn't be units that are an auto NOT include. Another of the goals was for there to be multiple different viable lists to come from each book, a minimum of 3, if I remember rightly. This is to promote variety of builds, not just one list that is spammed at each tournament.

Have they succeeded? Too early to tell at this point but with lots of interesting special rule changes, like parry gaining the "distracting" rule, I'm certainly looking at my Skaven differently now.
Yay! I'm good with Skavens again

Yeah go for it. I will knock a lizards list together since i don't have the models i need for elves. Want to try a few things out anyway!

Should be able to get there for about 6-6:30 if that's ok? Depends on traffic really!

Warren. I've been watching a couple battle reports on you tube and there is a fair amount of talk that the Wood Elves and Slaanesh themed daemons (perhaps more accurately, daemons in general) are classed as top tier (at the moment), by your comments I would read that you see that but need to heavily amend you previous models used?

I know ogres have been heavily modified and on paper a number of the changes seem bad or even unnecessary (but I've never been one who can write filthy lists simply from reading the books themselves - hell some would say I can't write filthy lists full stop - any success I've had has come from lots of practice and massive numbers of losses to better players) but I can't make judgements until I have had a chance to re-learn to use my army.

On that note however, I am really liking the look of the changes to dwarves but again need to play some games. Warren/George, I'd be happy to explore these new rules with you next Tuesday (25th - potentially the only date I can squeeze in before the new year) if either of you are free? Would be tempted to use dwarves, ogres, high elves or skaven for my first forays into 9th, let me know if either of you fancy it and what u would like to face?

Yeah 2400 please George.

After looking at the WE book I’m surprised to hear they are “top Tier” from what ive read they are middle of the road but without having actually played them I wouldn’t really be able to comment. I will however need to invest in treeman or two and some of their Great Weapon guys! They all look to be the top choices in the book. They have just gimped the shooting massively. Which is why im using Lizards for now since I have a lot more models and think I can put something pretty strong!

Funny you say that, ive heard Ogres are quite powerful! Ha guess different people have different opinion’s!

I’ve heard they have made big changes to dwarfs to stop the gun line armies, sounds like they have good options in scouts, ambush etc although I haven’t actually read their book so don’t know!

I would happily play next week, next Tuesday is the 24th though??

Im just trying to play as much variety as possible since right now I just need to get list experience!

Fair shout Warren, I seriously believe it is far too soon for anyone to seriously be classing any armies into a given tier as it will take time to relearn the strengths and weaknesses of the various options and build new combos (The lack of fear and terror - without magic/magic weapons - in ogre armies will take some getting used to). The lists generally look far more versatile than previously despite your comments (it is their intention to make every unit a viable option after all)

Apologies for the math but yeah next Tuesday is good, any preference what you face? I can be at BIG by 5:30.
