looking for a good boardgame

Postby Brother Axel » Sun Dec 28, 2014 3:18 pm

Hi guys

my kids are now getting to the stage where they enjoy boardgames, rpgs etc. so I'm looking for suggestions. I'm very familiar with AD&D, D&D, Ruenquest and all manner of rpgs and warhammer, 40k and all the GW specialist games but my boardgame knowledge is pretty dire.

Eldest son is 8 and he plays 40k and is pretty smart so he should be able to cope with boardgames aimed a fair bit older. I've played Descent with him which he enjoys. Games need to be good with 2, 3 and 4 players.

so . . . over to you lot for suggestions :-)

cheers for now

Great source for checking out board games is the table top web show

http://geekandsundry.com/shows/tabletop

Couple of weeks ago they were showing off catan junior, looked ok as a stripped back version of catan (which is awesome).

I could suggest lots of good games but honestly I have no idea how the minds of children work. They are strange and worrying creatures.

If he enjoys descent, the new hotness is imperial assault which is just star wars themed descent with a few core mechanic improvements.

If he's enjoying 40k then relic is a very good 40k themed board game.

Hi guys

thanks for the suggestions so far.

I was browsing the Fantasy Flight Games website earlier and saw Dungeon Quest. Anyone know if its any good? or suitable for my needs.

I think the kids and wife would prefer a fantasy style game to something science fiction. No way the wife would play relic just 'cause of the 40k connection

cheers

My top pick for pretty simple, fun, fast play would be Carcassone, good family fun.

Cosmic encounter. Simple, fun and plenty of tactical depth. The game never feels the same each time you play.

My brother got Ticket To Ride for Christmas, and I can highly recommend it.
I'll be the guy holding a cider and swearing at the dice.

I also have a fine collection of wooden spoons.

If you wanted to go 'co-op' for a fun, family experience there is Castle Panic, Shadows Over Camelot & Defenders of the Realm. They are all fantasy based.

I'd second Settlers of Catan, either full version or junior and Castle Panic. My little cousins enjoy the card game Uno! and my buddy's kids absolutely love Zombies!. Ones 10 and she loves the backstabbing element of sending Daddy all the way back where he started, and stealing stuff off him just as he gets into combat, and his 8 year old loves the artwork on the cards. Cluedo is always good, though I think it's just called Clue over here.

If they're a bit arty or creative then Pictionary or Balderdash are good family games.

Nick,

On a side note (and apologies for high-jacking your thread) are you still making those Necromunda rooms and walkways I bought off you last year?

Hi CJ

I've some sets of the Laser Cut scenery in stock but haven't made any new stuff for a while (the Laser went out of action for a while then self-employment went a bit crazy).

I'll PM you with a list of what I have. If you want anything above and beyond this I can check if the laser is working now and try and get some cutting done :-)

cheers for now (and a happy new year to everyone!)

I don't see why they did a Catan junior... It seems pretty stripped and simple as it stands already... :s

I highly recommend Munchkin in all its forms if you want something fairly light, but it can get very competitive as players primarily work to screw over the other players, especially in the end-game...

Hi guys

thanks for the suggestions

I borrowed a Dungeon Quest set and the kids loved playing it so I've got that on order.
I'll also probably get Cosmic Encounter -I love the sound of that one
Munchkin is a good one, I'd forgotten about that. It would also suit my RPG group :-)

cheers for now

Small World is a good little game with a few expansions around for it to keep it fresh and I played Talisman with the girlfriend and her kids (7,9 and 13) over Xmas they really got into it so that might be worth a look on the fantasy side.
