At the moment there is only a handful that still play from when cut and thrust closed. The new shop owners are big into malifaux so they will be stocking it all :-)

So I've been looking at the archanists what would be a good starter?

It's Arcanists (as in users of the arcane) - they tend to be the construct/spell focused faction but also have some of the most lengthy synergy chains if you can plan them.

This gives you a couple of different flavours, so I'll steal the summary from http://pullmyfinger.wikispaces.com/M2E+Arcanists for each of them, along with a bit of additional description taken from my view of them ... and a link to the actual box in question.

This lot have plastic crew boxes for each of them

Marcus - The Beast Master. Not a lot of direct damage spells. With his crew of beasts, Marcus plays an aggressive game of hit-and-run. - Has a massive range of stuff to pull from, ranging from a giant gorilla called Cojo to various birds. Tends to work by stacking synergies from different models together. - CREW BOX

Mei Feng - The Human Freight Train. Dual Faction Ten Thunders. Can leapfrog convoy along chains of friendly Constructs, and bounce from opponent to opponent in long chains of Strikes, Spells, and Triggers. A melee spellcaster. - Does a bit of everything (and well) but is more than happy to just rambo around using her crew as springboards, you can keep her swinging for an absurdly long time with enough good cards and understanding the synergies involved. Also allows you to take her as a member of the Ten Thunders faction if you want to branch out later. CREW BOX

Ramos - The Cyber-Spider Summoner. He has some direct damage electrical spells, but for the most part Ramos specializes in summoning mechanical spiders that move up and kill/detonate vs. enemy models. - Has an awesome theme but tends to only have one real trick. Beginner friendly as this allows you to focus on other parts of the game, but limited scope to 'do something new' - CREW BOX

Rasputina - The Ice Witch. Slow, but very good at dealing damage by throwing ice magic through her minions from a safe distance away (Warmachine players: think Arc Nodes). - The standard glass cannon mage with a toolbox of tricks (most of which you can get your tongue stuck to). Beginner friendly, as with Ramos above, but more scope to change things around as you improve - CREW BOX

These two are still using the old metal boxed sets

Kaeris - The Fire Witch. Sets friend and foe alike on fire for a variety of beneficial effects. - A lot less offensively leaning than 'Tina, above, due to the lack of area of effect spell but trades this for utility and personal survival if kitted out in the right way. Suffers major order of activation (see Warmachine) issues without careful forethought. - CREW BOX

Colette - The Illusionist. Manipulates and moves around quickly, using Scheme Markers as resources and leading a team of elegant Showgirls. - Queen of movement shenanigans and general BS, has a steep learning curve but very rewarding once you get there and you opponent is sporting the WTF?!?!? face. - CREW BOX

This one doesn't have a model currently, but will in the near future (but feel free to proxy away)

Ironsides - The Union Brawler. No subtle magician, Ironsides is a fearless bare-knuckles street brawler. She accumulates Adrenaline when she's surrounded and attacks, and takes a swing back when anyone attacks her.

From these I'd suggest, from the perspective of learning to play the game and having scope to improve, Rasputina. Ramos is a close second, but you somewhat pigeonhole yourself, and then Mei Feng due to all the options available in how to play her.

Worth noting that of all the factions Arcanists have the least crossover of models between the different masters. Not to say there aren't any general purpose figs but you'll find the big synergies for each will largely come from sticking within type ie Raspy can ping spells through anyone with the ice mirror special rule, so ice gamin, golem, silent one, snowstorm (sure I'm missing a few) but nobody else utilises that ability. Similarly Marcus is best with beasts but no specific synergy to other masters and so on across the lot.

What you tend to find with most other factions is there is a core pool of minions which will work well with any master and then a few which will specialise.

Doesn't make arcanists bad (they're pretty good by all accounts) but doesn't give the same impetus to pick up multiple masters from the same faction, which can be seen as a good or bad thing depending on viewpoint!

Looks like Syneri has given you a good write up on the Arcanist starter crews. I would add if you like spell slinging then other factions have masters that offer the ability to perform spells, Sonnia from the Guild loves to throw Fire around and can be one of the most brutal casters in the game. My advice to anyone looking to get into Malifaux is find a crew whose models you love and work from there. If you want to see some of the starter crews in the flesh at B.I.G. we have most of the starter sets in stock and on the shelves we are still settling in but as soon as I have a spare second will look at running some demos.
