SAGA - Anyone Playing

Postby Monk » Mon Jul 21, 2014 7:26 pm

So Gripping Beast sent me a rulebook and a few sprues of models to try out and now I am sat here looking at starter warbands. Does anyone play? The game itself looks wonderfully simplistic and small which fits my phase of skirmish only games.

Does anyone play and have a complete warband? I currently in the process of narrowing down my selection.

Ooo, Ooo, I've been wanting to try this (see my tag line) as well as Bushido for a while now. Count me in. I've got some painted Saxons

I can use but i'm really interested in playing the Vikings. Can you bring the rules tomorrow for Star Wars? (and the Dreadball Refrence Cards too please)?

I'm so tempted to go for the Viking starter set but with Halloween imminent I'll make do with my Saxon's for now.

Let me know when you're thinking of doing a run thru Liam and I'll happily join in. Who knows ... I may even read the rules for this one!

Never played but wouldn't mind a look through the rules at some point. Period of history that really does appeal so if pretty playable I could be up for this.

If you want to have a look at the rules just send me a message. I can get to the pub within 15 minutes don,t live far. Its a nice and easy game to learn and it don't need a lot of space to play on. the largest size table is 4x4ft. The rules cost about £25:00 and then all you need is the dice and an army.
6pts is a stranded size. Whic is 1 pt for warriors which is 8 to a unit 12 for levies which are your archers and such like.. then comes your hearth guard which are your elites. you get 4 to a unit. gripping beast is the main supplier for the miniatures. Hope I have been of help.

More elite vikings, but with the edition of the dark age warriors on the plastic sprues, I can use them as Vikings.

What can I say. I was in Awe all day of your impressive work skills. (I was also dazzled by your Shiny Pants, and now need Therapy)
Viking era is roughly 800 to the 1100 but was generally ended in Britain by the Norman Conquest of 1066.

Normans!!! I could do Normans if they are also covered in SAGA

I told you those Pants are court ordered - though a recent letter from NASA has asked that work indoors to avoid being spotted from space.

I lost my Firestorm games virginity today and visited the shop . Unfortunatly my wife was with me so my spending was slightly curbed as I was hoping to get some Welsh or Bretons/Normans but ended up with Scottish as they were a bit cheaper . Now to learn how to paint tartan...

I think Liam has got all his stuff built or close to it anyway and I've just got mine so I'm going to crack on with it . Hopefully in a couple of weeks (maybe less) we could get some kind of game going . One of the benefits of SAGA for us is that they have a scenario for multi army games straight off in the main rulebook .

That I can do. Any chance since you have all the rules you could let me know what figures I need for Saxons? At the moment I have 10 Infantry and 8 Calvary painted up.

The points for models is quite easy to work out
1 point = 4 Hearthguards / 8 Warriors / 12 Levies

Hearthguards being your elites , Warriors your standard troop and Levies the cheap grunts (generally just peasents or slaves)
Once you have your models you then put them in units of the same type however you like as long as there is
-No less than 4
-No more than 12
-If they have a choice weapons then they all have to have the same

It is the number of units that you have your models divided into that generate your SAGA dice , that are used for special abilities . So it is a balancing act as big units fight better but you'll not have as many dice than loads of small units .

So with Anglo-Saxons your HG can be mounted , so that is 2points , and you have 8 models of warriors to give you another point . So you'd have 3 points at the moment and we're starting with 4 point warbands . Something to bare in mind is that Anglo Saxons have a few abilities that benefit from units of at least 10 men (basically using a big shield wall) . On the plus side (if you haven't already got some) is that you can get a load of plastic Saxons fairly cheap . You'd also need a warlord to lead them all as well .
Hopefully this makes sense .

Yeah that helps. I assume from your post that mounted Huscarls cost double that of Infantry Huscarls? I assume the list is like a 'section' of warriors and these are then grouped into Units of between 4-12 models (i.e. 12 Fyrd, or 8 warriors plus 4 Huscarl, 3 lots of Huscarl etc.)

I think I'll go with the following so I get some practice at what everything does. 2pts for 4 Mounted Huscarl, 1pt for 8 Warriors and 1pt for 12 Fyrd.

I wasn't clear enough ;) being mounted doesn't make a difference to cost . I said 2 points for them as it was two lots of four . Hearth guards for the Anglo Saxons are the only ones that can be mounted . Equipment and horses don't make any difference to the points cost of models.

I'm ... not exactly sure how to take that? :? But I just ordered a Surcoat and some Medieval cutlery tonight, so we're even. :D

Liam and Dave are playing a game of Saga on Wednesday 10th Kev. I'm going to watch the rules and see how it all plays out. Can you make it too?
