So how did your games go?

I may have just bought a bunch more Imperial ships... so anyone fancy a game next week? Or maybe on the weekend?

I started basing everything last night. Using plenty of magnets so I'll be having no broken flight stands or spinny ships. :)

Ha, magnets are a great idea, I'm just too lazy to do it...

Had a great game vs the Chaos, narrow Imperial win in the end- thanks to a Dauntless LC that just wouldn't die, soaking up loads of fire in place of my already crippled flagship, and my surviving escorts actually made the difference- 2 swords crippling a cruiser over the course of the last 2 turns, blasting into the prow at point blank range, then doing the same from aft when the chaos cruiser passed them, unable to shoot back. Awesome stuff.

I should have 1000 points (well, 1005 actually) painted by Monday, but not likely to have enough for 2000 as i don't have any battleships sorted yet!

Next weekend is out for me though as it's the Expo

The UK games expo is a 3 day convention in Birmingham for board games mostly, but also card games, wargames, RPGs and so on.

Had a sweet game against Nightwing tonight which would have been a hell of a lot closer if he hadn't stoically refused to disengage his ships!

There were a few rules things that came up that I'd like to address. Firstly I just want to say that we were using the 2010 FAQ which, while not 100% 'official' as such, is widely accepted:
Attack craft can in fact attack the turn they are launched.
Capital Ships in squadrons must brace as a squadron (looked this one up on the way home!)

There's also a few changes that I'd like to suggest to the rules:
Further away ships in a squadron can be targeted with an LD check just like normal.
Hits against capital ship squadrons do not carry over.
Fighter CAPs only defend the single ship they are assigned to (and only have to roll to blow up if there's a blast marker in contact with that ship)
Maybe ships in squadrons should be able to Brace individually - the rest of the squadron can go on special orders next turn still?
Retribution Class Battleships are thoroughly underwhelming. How would people feel about 16 or even 18 point broadsides on them? (BFG:R is 355 points, 18 FP broadside).

In fact, how do people feel about Battlefleet Gothic Revised in general? Personally I dislike a lot of the fanmade ships (especially the Havoc and Viper escorts) but I like the balancing and points value changes for the existing ships.

Cheers, a cracking game which had me racking my brains to try and recall rules!

Attack craft being able to attack the turn they launch is huge. Makes CAP so vital.

Capital ships bracing as a squadron I actually think should be left as is; it means deciding whether to brace is a real decision as opposed to a no brainer. Makes things interesting if you have to decide whether to brace, for example, your Dominator, which means your Gothic will also have to brace, thus meaning predictable and limited movement the next turn.

And I'm going to take a look at the BFGR rules over the weekend; the fan produced ships seem way OP but might be worth adopting a few of the point rebalances, as there are certainly a few ships in BFG that are over/under priced for what they are.

It was definitely a good chance to re-learn things. I think we got the rules mostly right at least!

Happy to leave bracing as entire squadron if you prefer. Definitely a good reason not to squadron your ships if you don't need the LD boost though. Maybe it's something we can look at again after a few more games.

Did you have a chance to look over the BFG:R rules? The rules themselves seem okay and I agree about the fan-produced ships. I'm in no hurry to adopt them!

Squadrons are (and should be!) a double edged sword. So;

Pros
Can combine fire
Can use highest leadership of any ship
Only need to make one check for whole squadron to go on special orders

Cons
Bracing means the whole squadron has to brace
Movement restrictions i.e. have to remain within 15cm of another ship in squadron

I'd say the pros probably outweigh the cons, even with all ships having to brace!

As far as BFGR goes, the ships (at least the Imperial ones) seem to be a mixed lot; some insanely overpowered, some pretty reasonable. For example, I like the Jovian class battlecruiser (basically, just a carrier with a couple of lances, no broadsides) but the Avenger is insane- +4 firepower in each broadside, for 20 points cheaper?! Crazy. So, ships seem a bit unbalanced.

Haven't managed to read the rules themselves to see what has been tweaked though. Certainly up for house ruling any logical/common sense changes there might be

Ha, I'm exactly the opposite in my feelings about the ships! :D

I think the Jovian is boring, characterless Styx knock-off that has no right being in an Imperial fleet whereas the Avenger is perfectly reasonable as a better defended, slower Slaughter for 35 points more.

Would you care for another game next week? I should have my Retribution done by then. :)

Had a couple of fantastic games yesterday. Definitely think the Bait scenario could do with an overhaul though, these were my suggestions:

Pursuer major victory: Fleeing ship destroyed. Have more VP.
Pursuer Minor Victory: Fleeing ship destroyed.
Pursued Minor Victory: Fleeing ship survives
Pursued Major Victory: Fleeing ship destroyed. Have more VP.
The warp drives of the fleeing ship are damaged and the ship cannot disengage. If it leaves the table then it is considered destroyed.

Or don't give VP for the reinforcements coming on, but the Fleeing ship is worth double VP (200% destroyed, 50% crippled) and can't disengage.

It seems we're not alone in finding the scenario a bit weird as I posted it up on the BFG FB group and everyone seemed to be in agreement. Also this is probably worth a quick read:

I already mentioned on FB that I'd like to do it, would be very happy to have a one-day BFG event and 750/1.5k points will both be interesting. Is it over 750 points that you must have an admiral?

Oh, I hadn't seen that on Facebook. I'm certainly up for it, a 1 day event definitely doable and I have that weekend free currently.

Also, which Grand Cruiser are you adding to your fleet out of curiosity?

I'll be adding a Vengeance next (2 45cm lance, 10 60cm battery) and then possibly a second Vengeance after that. I quite like the idea of fielding them as a pair!

The Vengeance is a great GC. Decent ranged, rock hard broadsides to throw out. Only snag is the lack of prow torpedoes (and armoured prow, but the same with all GC's).

I need to paint mine up still...

Yeah, it seems like it fills a hole in the Imperial fleet, even if it is a little on the expensive side! I'm not sure how often it'll come out to play though given that I still need to afford rather expensive carrier support.

Here are my initial thoughts for the 750/1500 point lists:

Gothic Fleet 750:
Exorcist 230
- Shark Assault Boats 10
Gothic 180
Dominator 190
4 Swords 140

Gothic Fleet 1,500:
Fleet Admiral (LD8), One Re-Roll - 75
Mars 270
- Extra Turret 10
Exorcist 230
- Shark Assault Boats 10
Dictator 220
Gothic 180
Dominator 190
Dauntless (Lance) 110
3 Cobras 90
2 Firestorms 80
1 Sword 35
