BFG Tournament/Campaign

Postby Kingpenguin » Fri Feb 03, 2017 12:58 pm

Is anyone interested in partaking in a BFG tournament and/or campaign this year? In relation to this is anyone a particular whiz at writing fluff for this sort of thing?

I don't currently play BFG, but would be tempted to give it more of a try, after playing a quite fun demo game last year. What's the best way to start? Are PDF rulebooks available online, or would it be a matter of scouring eBay?

Similarly, I'd probably want to play an Imperial Navy fleet. Are there any recommended sources of "good enough" models without having to buy either ruinously expensive rare OOP originals, or super-custom Shapeways 3d prints?

Finally, I'm clearly not very near being tournament ready, but would be happy to dabble in something like a minor escalation campaign. I'm not the world's best fluff writer, but I'd be happy to chip in.

It's true that it isn't a newbie friendly game as far as the authentic models are concerned, but this is somewhat offset by the number of available proxies and the rules being available on line.

The best place to find all info is on the specialist games forum, findable via a quick google search. The BFG part of the forum collects all up to date rule sets as free PDF downloads. There is also a section on the best proxies for each race. On the subject of proxies, if you fancy making your own, the dark elder and tyranid fleets offer a lot in the way of scratch building potential from 40K models.

I wouldn't rush into buying a fleet. If you want to try out imperials against a variety of opponents, you can use my models. This is also a great time to get into the hobby as GW is likely to be re-releasing the starter or something similar within the next 12 months.

Finally, thanks for showing some interest. It is a game that has provided much enjoyment for me over the years. An escalation campaign sounds great. Just what the community needs to blow away the cobwebs.

I'm definitely interested, and hope to (finally!) have my house move done by the end of March so I can bust my models out of storage again. So, as long as we aren't looking to start before then, I'm in :D

I might well be interested in trying this out. I'd be very tempted with orks but know nothing about them as a fleet, what to buy/build or how they play (although I can guess that bit).

Orks are great. Basically, ram enemy ships (one of their main vessels is a Ram Ship!), board and kill, blast away at close range. In short- exactly what you would expect from Orks! Easy to kitbash some ships from your bitz box as well...

It's good to see so much interest. I'm happy to run some intro games if people want? I can bring a few of my fleets if you want to try some different races. I have Imperial, Chaos, Orks and Tau.

An intro game would be very handy.
I love orks, mainly because you can scratch build anything you like. Having said that I think I do need some idea what I'm building.

I'd be happy to come along or run intro games too. Everything is going to be boxed away for a couple of weeks still (which is why I've been a bit quiet) though.

Assuming that we're roleplaying on Tuesday how would Wednesday or Thursday suit?

Once I have some idea of what I'm doing a campaign would be of interest.

My preference would also be a campaign, possibly with a small tournament as a capstone once we've all had a chance to learn how things work!

In terms of a campaign, I certainly can't commit to weekly; maybe something like monthly turns?

And for next week, Mondays aren't good for me, but a Weds or Thurs slot would be great.

OK, well if I bring all of my fleets on Wednesday then I can run some introduction games. If we could find a fourth that would help. Nightwing, are you in?

7 works for me, assuming we are still on for Wednesday this week. I'll try and remember to print out a copy of the rules! My models are still mothballed at the back of my storage unit unfortunately, but happy to run an intro game as long as you can lend me a couple of fleets :D

Great. See everyone on Wednesday at 7pm.

Will we need 2 tables or can we spilt one table for 2 games?

Yes still on for Wednesday night. I might just make four small forces for cruiser clash and bring those. Are we ok to have two tables? I will also bring some terrain. I'm looking forward to it

Yeah, I couldn't get it either. It directed me to my own Dropbox home folder - which implies to me that it was a copied link, rather than a deliberate sharing link?

Well, I've bought a thing from eBay which claims to be the full original boxed game. I'll see when it arrives. The pics implied the ships were already assembled, which would be a slight shame if true, but not the end of the world.

I also bought some other toys for Flames of War, so I'm going to dial back for a little while, but at least now I can be in a position of having a foot in the door and being able to top up with smaller purchases - a few escorts here, another capital ship there.

And at an average of ~180ish points a go, I can probably start playing anything in the 500-750pts range straight out of the box, if we were talking about doing some sort of Escalation campaign.

My parcel arrived! The Imperial ships came assembled (2 Dominator, 2 Lunar) and Chaos ships unassembled. Some minor damage to weak protrusions (prow spikes, antennas etc) but generally all good.

So, who's up for a game some time?

I'll happily give you a game. Are you going Imperial, chaos or both?

On another note, how does everyone feel about gathering interest for some sort of campaign? We could have a small league or round robin to enable everyone to shake down their fleets and shake off the rust?

I've picked up a game for this week, but very happy to play next week. I'm almost certainly going to focus Imperial, but keep the Chaos fleet as an opfor for when I want a small pick-up game. I shall serve the Emperor faithfully, and put my trust in Him on Holy Terra to protect my immortal soul; I am weak and have strayed from the true path on occasion throughout my life, but I am not prepared to throw in my lot with the Ruinous Powers!

I think a campaign, possibly with some sort of Escalation element to it, would be great. My suggestion would be for all players to commit to a minimum of one game per month, with a small (but hopefully non game-breaking) bonus for playing more; points limits something like 500/750/1000 for March/April/May, with a massed battle some time in June to conclude?
