Proposed X-Wing League.

Postby ScaredOfCrows » Mon Sep 08, 2014 4:13 pm

That's right! Checking to see who would be interested in an X-Wing league.

Here is a rough plan for the league to enable players to make an informed decision when stating interest.

-Standard league format: Everyone plays everyone with two weeks to sort out and play a game with your assigned opponent.
-100 point games.
-FFG tournament rules for deciding on a win and the points earned for victory. Games will have no time limit and will be played to the death. Modified wins will, therefore, not be possible but tied games will be.

Right, down to the interesting bit.

Before the league begins players will:
-pick a faction
-build a 'hangar' (A hangar will consist of 200 points worth of pilots and upgrades and will be set from the start of the season.)

Hold on. WTF is a Hangar?

A player's hangar will be made up of 200 points worth of ships and upgrades. These will be the only ships and upgrades that can be used throughout the season. Before each game, players will select up to 100 points worth of pilots with their fixed upgrades (yes that's right, Luke cannot lend Biggs his astromech for the fortnight). This is intended to provide flexibility but also maintain some sort of player identity. Lists will be decided upon before the game starts and should be revealed simultaneously.

Hangars will be submitted to the organiser and published to the forum before the season begins.

For example:

I choose Rebels then hop on a squad builder and sort out my hanger.

Wedge Antilles + R7-T1 + Swarm Tactics (34)
Ibtisam + Push the Limit (31)
Airen Cracken (19)
Bandit Squadron Pilot + Cluster Missiles (16)
Dagger Squadron Pilot + Advanced Sensors (27)
Rookie Pilot (21)
Rookie Pilot (21)
"Dutch" Vander + Flechette Torpedo + Ion Cannon Turret (30)
=199pts

For my first game I might choose:

Wedge + R7-T1 + Swarm Tactics (34)
Airen Cracken (19)
Bandit Squadron Pilot + Cluster Missiles (16)
*Ibtisam + Push the Limit (31)
=100pts

If this flew badly or I just decide that Z-95s will suck against my next opponent, for my second game, I might go with:
*Ibtisam + Push the Limit (31)
Dagger Squadron Pilot + Advanced Sensors (27)
Rookie Pilot (21)
Rookie Pilot (21)
=100pts

And so on.

*Note that Ibtisam is stuck with her PTL upgrade and cannot be selected without it, nor can she take other upgrades.

This is a rough draft and rules will be written clearly and formally if we go ahead. Here are a couple of early rulings. Proxied upgrade cards (released cards only) will be allowed but Ships, Pilot cards and bases will not. Feel free to choose unreleased (spoiled) pilots but bear in mind you won't be able to use them until you have the model and pilot card!

Questions are welcomed. Comments, slightly less so.

Who would like to play? Let me know below!

I'm interested in starting buying some of the models, so pencil me in as interested. :)

Suggestion: how about we have our own ace pilot, someone to represent us in the cockpit of one of the ships in our hangar? Optional, of course, but I reckon you could pick a ship at the second lowest pilot skill, pay it's points, and boom! your ace is born. Each survived mission gains an XP, each kill gains an XP. 3 XP gains you a pilot skill point. If you reach your starting pilot skill + 3 (so 9 XP) you gain an EPT, to represent some kind of pilot ability (like Wedge's, for example) that you pay no squad points for. Once you gain your starting pilot skill + 5, you gain a single point to apply to either fire power, agility, hull, or shield.

That last one would need some balancing, but you can see the kind of pilot progress I'm aiming at...

Cai, I had considered this but discounted it for a number of reasons:

-Free EPTs could easily be OP and break the game.
-X-Wing is a bloody game and it is very unlikely pilots will survive a number of battles.
-If you do have pilots that survive lots of games you probably don't need the advantage of a free EPT.
-I hate admin and want to keep it to a minimum.

I'm afraid your ace/personal pilot narrative will have to be conjured using your imagination. I have a friend who always names his rookies and It is great fun when 'Barry' gets a few kills! There's an excellent artice on Team Coveneant about 'flying as if you were one of the pilots' and the tactical advantages that might ensue. Check it!http://teamcovenant.com/theorist/2014/08/13/pew-pew-sounds-ftw/.

Yeah keep it simple I say. The hangar is enough of a variable to track in itself.

I've decided on rebels. The hangar idea gets better the more I contemplate builds.

So far:

Biggs - naked
Keyan - veteran instincts, advanced sensors
Tarn - R7
Corran - R7-T1, PTL, FCS
Cracken - deadeye, cluster missiles
2 x bandit Z95s
Kyle - moldy crow, blaster turret, recon specialist, opportunist.

Can I take Rebels. If it becomes horribly unbalanced side wise I shall switch across.

Rather than having xp/bonuses for your named pilot , how about you can name one of them and having a desperate table for how many games/kills they get . It would add a bit of bragging rights and wouldn't unbalance the game either .

Worth mentioning that, if you are new to the game or just don't have many ships, there is no reason you can't have a full 200 point hangar. With Just the core set and a couple of expansions you will easily have enough options to, not only field a strong 100 point squad, but also build a flexible hangar. You could easily get involved for around £60!

Check it!
Core set £25
Firespray £25
Interceptor £12

With the two TIE fighters, TIE Interceptor, Firespray 31 and the included pilots you could build a hangar of:

Krassis Trelix + Heavy Laser Cannon + Mercenary Copilot (45)
Bounty Hunter + Seismic Charges + Gunner (40)
Turr Phennir + targeting computer + Push the Limit (30)
Academy Pilot (12)
Black Squadron Pilot (13)
Mauler Mithel + Predator + hull upgrade (23)
Winged Gundark (15)
Saber Squadron Pilot (21)
=199pts

Even with the limitations of not being able to, for example, fly Krassis and the bounty hunter at the same time ('cause you only have 1 firespray model) you will still have a number of options:

Krassis Trelix + Heavy Laser Cannon + Mercenary Copilot (45)
Turr Phennir + Targeting computer + Push the Limit (30)
Academy Pilot (12)
Black Squadron Pilot (13)
=100pts

Krassis Trelix + Heavy Laser Cannon + Mercenary Copilot (45)
Mauler Mithel + Predator + hull upgrade (23)
Turr Phennir + Targeting computer + Push the Limit (30)
=98pts

Turr Phennir + Targeting computer + Push the Limit (30)
Bounty Hunter + Seismic Charges + Gunner (40)
Winged Gundark (15)
Black Squadron Pilot (13)
=98pts

Definitely up for players submitting additional information when they post game results. Hearing about badass moves, heroic pilots who refuse die, crazy one shot kills and epic fails would be great. Uploading match photos and writing full blown battle reports will also be encouraged as it will make it a more immersive and fun experience for everyone.

We'll try to do a pilot of the match sort of thing so outstanding solo performances can be a matter of record.

Looks good. I like the inclusion of a tricked out Corran. He'll work well as an assasin. Cracken's a solid choice for challenging swarms and breaking up formations. HWKs rule! obvs. Keyan could be a risky move. What if the boat sinks!

Anyone got the balls to choose a Decimator or YT-2400 in the hope you can get hold of one before the season ends? Cai?

Start date? Soon. I will come up with a deadline for hangar submission and a start date for the league tomorrow.

After some pondering, I thought this seemed like a reasonable imp hanger

4 Academies 48pts
Howlrunner (Stealth device) 21pts
Turr Phenir (Ptl) 28pts
Sontir Fel (Ptl) 30pts
Echo (VI, Adv Cloak, FCS, Weapons Engineer)40pts
Shuttle(FCS, Vader, Engine) 30pts

Feel like having Turr Phenir and Fel is abit redundant though, thinking I could possibly drop one of them to invest, in a defender or firespray for some variety, but still pondering.

I'll go balls deep and go Imperials with the hope that I get my hands on the Decimator before the season ends. :D

I am concerned that my hangar will only be maybe four ships, though... xD

Nah rebel aces will be out on the 25th and I'm about to leave on holiday to return on the 21st. I can go at least one game without him.

Gah, the difficulty is getting multiple viable builds out of the hangar. Luckily I love list building :D

This is going to take a bit of refining...

Drop Turr and spend 30 points on 2 TIE Fighters. Full 7 TIE swarm and another swappable 30 option.
