Match played 06/11/2014

Thunderchild (Gary) Rebels

Wes Janson - R2D2, Veteran Instincts, Fletchette Torpedoes, Munitions Failsafe.

Lt Blount - Veteran Instincts, Assault Missiles.

Grey Sqd Pilot – Ion Cannon Turret, Fletchette Torpedoes.

Bandit Squadron Pilot.

Nightwing (Matt) Imperial (From memory not 100% accurate)

Darth Vader - Stealth Device

Kir Kanos - Stealth Device

Mauler Mithel – Veteran Instincts, Stealth Device

Winged Gundark – Stealth Device

** I will be recounting the battle from memory and as such this is a disclaimer that what you are about to read may not be 100% accurate**

**Positions will be described from my point of view**

Deployment:

Matt had the initiative so the asteroids went down in a (kind of) diagonal cluster going from my middle upper left towards the lower right.
I deployed my Bandit first about range two from my left hand side of the board and the usual one forward. Then I placed my Grey at the board edge and about one to the right of the Bandit.
Matt then placed Gundark and Kir in a tight side by side formation facing off against the Bandit, I then placed Lt Blount (I call him James ….. geddit!? Buh dum tish!) snugly behind the bandit. Matt then placed Mauler Mithel and Darth towards the middle of the board and I finished up by placing Wes to the right of my Grey so he
lined up with Vader.

Game start:

Standard movement for turn one, I brought  everyone forward at 3 speed keeping the squad close together and giving them space to turn left or right before reaching the asteroids depending on where Matt's Ties went. My priority target at this point was Kir, I did not want him to get behind me so the plan was to stress/ion him out of the game asap. Matt moved his pilots forward keeping formation but just out of reach of my guys so no shooting this turn.

As there had been no clear indication that Matt had singled out one of my ships I played it safe and most the squadron just moved ahead one so I could start getting target locks whilst keeping Matt at range 2/3. Blount locked onto Gundark and Wes locked onto Darth. LtB lit rip with his assault missiles and managed to completely miss his target and Gundark took no damage, luckily for me thanks to Blount's ability the splash damage from the missiles still triggered and Kir took damage as he was at range 1 of WG. Meanwhile Darth also took no damage (Note to self, roll better) but still got stressed thanks to the fletchettes.
Matt returned fire at the Bandit and my Y-Wing with both losing a shield, meanwhile Wes and Blount take no damage.

It's at this point that the real fight began and my ability to recall who did what to whom goes right out the window.
My plan to block the incoming WG with the Bandit works a bit too well and Kir goes slamming into the rear of his wingman, this then causes LtB to fail his 3k manoeuvre so we end up with a fantastic four ship pileup. The Y-wing stays in the middle facing off against MM and Wes manages to K turn behind Vader who is turning to bring his guns to bear on the multi ship pileup.

I try and break up the fur ball next turn so move LtB away from the fray and K turn the bandit so he's facing back Wes just moves one into the middle trying to keep Vader in his sights whilst not bumping anything else.

Shots are fired and damaged is exchanged Lt Blount loses his shields, I manage to Ion and take Kir to 1 health before the next turn when my Y-wing is obliterated by the return fire from Kir MM and Darth Vader. Next round the Bandit saves the day managing to finish Kir off thanks to having a target lock on the interceptor. Wes instead of doing the sensible thing and targeting a damaged WG tries to land some shots on Vader but Matt's evade rolling with the help of the stealth device is strong so nothing happens.

Next action phase it's revealed that Matt has accidentally used the wrong dial for Vader and had chosen a 5K which the Tie Advanced can't do, after checking with Sam it's determined that I can choose the manoeuvre that Vader will take. Now most people would fly Vader off the board but I just couldn't bring myself to do it so chose a 4 forward and kept him facing away from the fight. I Kturn ltB in an attempt to use the higher PS to my advantage and lay some hurt on the WG on his tail. However after some pitiful shooting I loose LtB to fire from WG Wes again fails to do anything significant. Suddenly I start to get nervous I'm down two ships to Matt's one and one of the few I have left is a Bandit with no shields! He has a full health Vader, MM and a slightly damaged WG.

Vader then spends the next couple of turns getting back into the fray meanwhile I manage to take out WG and chase after MM with Wes. MM is taken down, I manage to pop him with a brutal volley of fire but not before embarrassing myself and parking Wes on a rock.
Meanwhile the Bandit (with no shields) hangs on in there, Vader returns to find that his wingmen are gone and he's facing off against Wes and the Bandit, he lands some nasty hits on Wes and the next couple of turns involve Vader chasing the Bandit through the roids whilst Wes tries to recover shields ("R2 see what you can do back there!"), get a lock and line up some decent shots. On a number of occasions I manage this but combinations of Vader's dual actions and a stealth device and Matt's rolling mean that I just can't seem to take him down. I manage to finally get Vader to 1 hull point but Wes still can't seem to finish the job. In the end it all came down to the Bandit who fed up with being chased by Vader decides to K turn and take a swing at range 3, the plucky sacrificial lamb manages first to evade Vader's incoming fire like a champ and then proceeds in landing two un aided critical hits at range 3. Vader's luck finally runs out meaning that the little Bandit pilot earns the MVP title for taking out the Sith Lord.

A really intense, fun match. I was concerned with the high pilot skill levels of Matt's squad and was really lucky to come away with a win on this one. Losing my beloved Y-wing so early was a brutal blow and denied me my control element. Once again I ended up having to split my fire and dealing damage out piecemeal instead of focusing down single targets at a time. Wes was a mixed bag this game sometimes doing well other times failing horribly, MVP has to be the Bandit, I never expected him to last past turn two let alone dodge Vader's final shots allowing him to nail the Sith Lord in return. Another one to add to my growing list of awesome down to the wire X-Wing games.

Sh*t was indeed epic. I was compelled to leave my game against Sam and check in on the match on more than one occasion.

Results added to table.

A great description there, and very accurate from my memory! I loved the fact that Vader and Wes spent the last few turns dancing around each other, neither managing to do much (including both of us missing in a head to head, range 1 showdown where I don't think either of us rolled a single hit on the red dice!), before Bandit just decided sod this, and nailed Vader at range 3 (after Wes again fluffed his attacks at point blank range). Epic stuff.

Nekhromosis vs Maelzch

Maelzch wins!

An E-Wing with R2-D2 once again proves to be a real pain in the ass. On this occasion, the psychological trauma of the encounter proved too much for the last remaining academy pilot who chose to fly directly into a nearby star rather than continue the fight.

Looks like this was the regular season.

44 games played in 7 weeks. Good work kids!

The league table should be correct. Everybody please check their scores and let me know of any mistakes. I will post the playoff fixtures tomorrow after allowing time for the scores to be confirmed.

Rebel propaganda…. it was a Veteran Black squadron Pilot who chose to barrel roll off into the distance and warn the Star Destroyer Emperor's Wrath, of a scumbag rebel pilot with a frakking annoying R2 unit that wouldn't die despite taking countless hits.

Next time, the E-Wing will not be so fortunate. Lessons learned, resources and tactics adjusted accordingly.

Jake, you've let me down! Curses!

Nightwing and I didn't agree a game time so we failed to meet each other... Sam pips me by a handful of VPs. Is it too late to complain about the deadline being extended? :P

My playoff game with Gary saw me unwrap the yt2400, look up my hanger on the forum and then back it up with Tarn Mison and the naked B wing to go hunting!
Gary had a bandit, y wing with ion, Blount and Wes both with VI meaning he had the pilot skill advantage.

On the other hand Dash produced 4 hits just about every turn smashing the bandit and the y wing to death with a little finishing off from his trailing wingmen. Tarn even got in on the action to give the y wing another taste of four hits at ppint blank range to kill it and then shot Wes in the back so Dash could finish him. Wes and Blount had managed to get the Outrider down to two hull remaining but Dash's ability to charge through asteroids and barrel roll off them in order to fire is immense. I did that about 3 times and it makes the yt2400 absurdly hard to follow and keep fighting doubly so when it throws the damage it does.

Win to Hymirl! 200 to zero.

I played both of my games using the Oicunn Decimator and Echo builds (40 point Echo is so good...).

Scott33 had roughly: Major Rhymer with 2x proton torpedoes, Delta Defender, Backstabber, and an Academy TIE.

Playing super aggressively with Oicunn and disrupting Scott's formation flying, combined with Scott focussing on Echo, meant he never got a decent chance to shoot the Decimator. Echo shot ships to pieces (as he does), and Picunn mopped up. 200-0 to me, and no damage taken on the Decimator (bonus points? :D).

Pat (CanadianImport) had roughly Maarek Stele, Winged Gundark, Backstabber, one other named TIE, and an Interceptor.

Having read what Oicunn does, Pat spread all of his ships out along his deployment zone. Reasonable idea, but it meant he couldn't focus any of his ships on one target. Pat spent too much time on Echo as well, meaning the Decimator has free reign to Decimate. Echo and Oicunn focussed on Stele first, then mopped up the rest. Oicunn took some damage this time though. :P Another 200-0 win to me.

Scott, Pat: if I've missed anything from your fleets, or you think I've misrepresented anything, let me know and I'll change it. :D

CaptainJay
Sontir Fel (27) + PtL(3)= 30pts
Echo (30) + VI (1) + Advanced Cloaking (4) + FCS (2) + Weapons Engineer (3) = 40pts
Shuttle(21) + FCS (2) + Vader (3) + Engine Upgrade (4) = 30pts

ScaredOfCrows
Kyle Katarn (21) + Push the Limit (3) + Blaster Turret (4) + Recon Specialist (3) + Moldy Crow (3) + Engine Upgrade (4) =(38)
Jan Ors (25) + Veteran Instincts (1) + Ion Cannon Turret (5) + Nien Nunb (1) + Engine Upgrade (4) =(36)
Tarn Mison (23) + R7 Astromech (2) =(25)

Semi-Final time!

The Empire's finest sprung a trap on the Rebel scum and a fast moving Shuttle was able to get off an early shot. As the trap closed, Echo found her targeting computer and weapons engineer were giving her bad data making landing a shot difficult. The Rebel mechanics in contrast seemed to have done a great job aligning the crystals in the Ion cannon.

Echo and Soontir tore into Jan, who took heavy damage, but survived. The interceptor, caught by the ION turret, was left drifting.

Kyle gunned the HWK's modified engine and drew fire away from Jan. The Shuttle did some serious damage from close range and Echo managed to overcome her IT issues and, after pulling a badass maneuver, blew the Mouldy Crow into a thousand pieces. Tarn Mison banked hard towards the drifting Soontir and opened up, killing the Baron.

Jan was able to avoid being caught by the Shuttle as it turned and was able to ionize echo before she could cloak by virtue of her superior pilot skill. Tarn swung hard around an asteroid looking to avenge the death of Kyle and was able to pick off the now vulnerable Echo.

Great game, could have gone either way. Cheers OJ.

SCCR wins 100 - 38.

There is a 'murder of crows' joke there somewhere...

Anyhow I met up with Lee for the last game in the whateves division. I had Dash, Tarn and a B wing while Lee had Biggs, Ethan and two Z95s.

Set up opposite each other on the side of the table, but Dash broke off to the centre to keep the range long. Lee turned his ships to intercept taking most of dash's shields but exposing his flank to my escorts who managed to finish off biggs. The outrider flew away and the small ships had a fairly ineffectual joust and my ships broke off and split away instead of k turning without the yt2400 providing fire support.

Ethan took a battering from heavy laser but managed to regen shields without getting finished off. But the z95s got caught and finished off before my three rather battered ships hunted Etahn down.

200 - 0 to me! Surely I get promoted to the next division?

We then had a friendly game where I learned that Decimators win point blank firefights with yt2400s... oh hum.

I played nightwing last night in our spoon off match.
First few exchanges went mat's way. Then the asteroids decided to make themselves a pain and his dice deserted him and mine came up trumps. A win to me. Sorry i couldn't get all my league matches completed. Real life sucks.

Sam Vs James.

Well the Semi-Final, Me vs James, Loser has the pleasure of playing OJ to decide 4th place, Winner gets to face the HWKs for the trophy!

There were many photos taken & I'm sure they will appear soon.

Lists;

James;
Keyan, Nera, Biggs, Bandit.

Sam;
Echo, Jax, Academy TIE, Howlrunner.

The game started cagey, Shenanigans were afoot & it took a short while for engagements to start, a magical move from Echo got her right in the flank of the rebels pinwheel formation, Biggs took the brunt of her anger. Jax forgot he could push the limit & got his actions all mixed up sitting a range 1 of the bandit but with no shot of his own. from here the flying from both sides was great, very tactical, the second mistake from the Imperials when Echo forgot to activate her Advanced Cloaking Device leaving her in a less than optimal place & Keyan punished her for it, removing Echo from the board, The Academy went down in the same turn to Nera & Biggs. Carnor & Howl tried their best but were only able to drag Biggs down along with them. A Win to James 175-25.

A great game that was very close & 2 key mistakes from me definitely lost me the game.

Cracking game Sam! A real shame you made the Echo mistake as your manoeuvre selection was excellent otherwise.

I'm afraid to say that Ian will be unbearable. I managed to take down Kyle but Jan had all her hull intact and tarn hadn't taken any damage. B-Wings vs ion isn't a good match up.

Congrats to Ian. Anyone that can come up with a list like that unique and win thoroughly deserves to be top of the league.
