A reminder of how to calculate the Margin of Victory (MOV).

Margin of Victory
At the end of each match, the player who has destroyed more squad points
adds the amount by which his score exceeds his opponent’s score to 100
and records it on his score sheet. The player who has destroyed fewer squad
points subtracts the same amount from 100 and records it on his score sheet.

End of match example: Stu wins the game, destroying 53 squad
points of his opponent’s ships. Stu’s opponent, CJ, has
destroyed 24 points of Stu’s ships. Stu wins by 29 points,
which he adds to 100 for a margin of 129. CJ loses by 29
points, which he subtracts from 100 for a margin of 71.

If a player destroys all of his opponent’s ships, his opponent’s squad is worth
100 squad points, even if it is worth fewer squad points to begin with.

So, Sam and I kicked off Bear Wars II in pretty intense fashion earlier this evening.

I won 100-61 (making MoV 139-61?).

I flew:
·Wedge Antilles (29) - Push the Limit (3), R2 Astromech (1) = (33)
·Luke Skywalker (28) - Marksmanship (3), ·R2D2 (4), ·Experimental Interface (3) - (38)
·Jake Farrell (24) - Veteran Instincts (1), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Push The Limit (3), Chardaan Refit (-2), Autothrusters (2) = (28)

Sam flew:
Kath Scarlet (38) Opportunist (4) K4 Security Droid 3 = (45)
Palob Godalhi (20) Opportunist (4) Blaster Turret (4) K4 Security Droid (3) =( 31)
2 xBinayre Pirate — Z-95 Headhunter = (12)

Like I said, this game was intense. It started out fairly slowly; the opening exchange was on turn two, but it was fairly average, with Wedge and Luke stripping a couple of shields from a Z95, and Jake circling around and picking on Palob, knocking a shield off. Fast forward a turn or two of bumping, Kath finally getting involved, a Z95 falling, and Wedge and Palob taking a beating, and the first Rebel All-Star falls - Palob scored 4 hits with the blaster turret, to which Jake rolled three blanks and a focus. Even the autothrusters couldn't help (Jake lost a shield earlier on). Palob (on one hull by this point, after Jake failed to finish him off) ran off in the hope that Kath and the other Z95 would kill Wedge and Luke before he exploded. Wedge was ordered to fall back (he wasn't doing any good back there anyway) after Kath stripped his last hull point, leaving Luke against a battered Kath, nearly dead Palob, and plucky Binayre Pirate. Here's where it gets intense...

Luke got his end-game on at this point, felling Palob at last, before bagging the Pirate, then flipping a bitch in front of Kath. Next turn, Kath went for a block and failed by a fraction of a nub, leaving Luke with a target lock and marksmanship at literally point blank range. Game over.
R2D2 earned himself a nuce long rest and a polish after that game. Sam probably did enough damage to kill Luke two or three times over.

My pilot of the match was Luke, without a doubt. If we were to be more specific though, man or droid of the match would have to go to R2D2. Anything you disagree on, Sam?

sounds spot on. words can not describe how intense this game was! probably the best game of X-Wing EVER! I can't believe I lost it! should have killed Luke first but the way it all panned out it just wasn't possible, next time I'll be sure to put my brain inside my skull before the game starts XD

I hung around to watch this game after we did the draw. Dayum that was a nail biter! Opportunist Kath chucking 6 red dice was scary, as was a single Z95 that had great position all game. It just wasn't enough to take down Skywalker whose marksmanship delivered some key crits. Well played guys!

Fitting that Luke wins the first engagement in the battle for Tatooine.

So two games tonight...

Round one:

Vargas vs Chall1977

Vargas

IG88B
Stay on target
Advanced sensors
Mangler cannon
Inertial dampeners
Autothrusters
Title

IG88C
Stay on target
Advanced sensors
HLC
Inertial dampeners
Autothrusters
Title

Chall1977

Whisper
Advanced cloaking device
Fire control system
Calculated
Tactician

Kenkirk
Darth Vader
Ysanne isaard
Seismic charge
Intimidation
Rebel captive
Anti pursuit lasers

2 very different 2 ship lists squared up against one another. The number dropped quickly as whisper withered under HLC Fire without firing a single shot in anger. The new decloaking timing is going to take some getting used to!

So this was really 2 IG88s vs a Decimator. 16HP vs 16HP. One turret vs two forward arcs. It proved to be a closer match than I had anticipated. Rebel captive is an absolute pain in the arse for Aggressors - they do not like getting stressed! A lot of the game was spent shooting and them running away to de-stress.

Darth Vader meanwhile was waiting for the shields to be stripped from the Agressors before doing his thing. By the time that had happened the decimator was done to 5 hull. A crit on IG88B was inconsequential but took kenkirk down to 3 hull. IG88C took another another 2 hull off of kenkirk and in a glorious attempt to kill an IG88 Vader triggered destroying the decimator and landing a crit on IG88B who was on 2 hull. The crit was for a single damage and the game finished with two hurt IG88s still standing, barely, on the table. The decimator had a lot more game than I initially gave it credit for - and maybe could have had me with gunner crew.

This could have been very different had whisper stuck around for longer. Autothrusters and the boost/evade combo was near impenetrable.

Vargas 200 - 0 Chall1977

Game 2

Vargas vs Wobbly Goggy

Vargas

IG88s as listed above

Wobbly Goggy

2 PS1 star vipers (one with autothrusters)
2 PS1 Z95s
BTL Y-wing with ion cannon and unhinged astromech

I must remind myself that jousting with Aggressors does not work - the 4 ship Rebel player in me is irrepressible. IG88B died getting trapped by the scum swarm. Goggy played some very good blocking tactics trapping the Aggressors big base and giving out so much damage that it fell apart. 1 aggressor vs 5 scum ships...

And it won! Thanks to stay on target and inertial dampeners the remaining IG88 was able to dance around the remaining ships picking them off one at a time. Goggy helped out by flying a starviper off the board - albeit with one HP left. Credit goes to Goggy for playing an astute blocking game and keeping the aggressors paths closed down for so long. A decent player in the making methinks.

Vargas 152 - 48 wobbly Goggy

Two games tonight, versus Wobbly Googy and Chall1977.

Game one:

2 PS1 star vipers (one with autothrusters)
2 PS1 Z95s
BTL Y-wing with ion cannon and unhinged astromech

vs:

Eight Academy Ties.

This was a straight up brawl. Both Scum and Imperial swarms charged directly at each other, and the dice would decided who survived. Turns out rolling really badly for evades hurts a bit, so the Ties were getting one-shotted by everything, and failing to take down anything in a decent amount of time.

Image

I managed to claw back a little, but when the dust settled over Bespin, two Z-95's were left standing - 100 to 76.

MOV:
Wobbly Googy 124
Domfluff 76

Man of the match was Z-95 #29 - one shotting Ties and generally getting in the way of everything :)

Game two, vs Chall1977.

This was eight academy ties vs Whisper/Decimator, and a well built combo at that. This was always going to be tough.

Whisper
Advanced cloaking device
Fire control system
Calculation
Tactician

Kenkirk
Darth Vader
Ysanne isaard
Seismic charge
Intimidation
Rebel captive
Anti pursuit lasers

More interesting for me, this was the first game after the Phantom rules update - so this is essentially an entirely different ship, albeit still one that attacks and defends with four dice...

Image

With timed rounds I would usually try to kill the Decimator early, then either hope to get lucky or just survive long enough to sneak in with a win. This wasn't an option here, so this was going to be tough.

We both sneaked up the board edges, wary of being flanked. I was playing the approach doubly cautiously, since I really didn't know what the new Phantoms were capable of - I really didn't want to get blocked and outflanked by Whisper!

We turned in and approached the merge in the loose asteroid field. Kenkirk immediately vaporised a Tie Fighter at range three with one shot (four blanks... it still felt like the previous game...), I got a lucky shield hit on Whisper, and started the long process of wearing away the Decimator.

One block of Ties became two, became seven as midgame approached, and Whisper was properly engaged. I made use of hard one's to surprise Chris, and the new Phantom rules gave me a chance at anticipating his direction.

Then this happened:

Image

That's a PS1 Academy Tie bumping a Phantom, and giving two other Tie's range one shots on her. Holy S***.

Eventually, I managed to bend the swirling mess into my favour, and take Whisper down, and then it was a case of mopping up the last few hull points on Kenkirk.

I think Chris played really well here - his list was solid (not sure about Calculation, mind you), but I managed to sneak the little dudes ahead.

Domfluff 100, Chall1977 12

MOV - Domfluff 188 Chall1977 12

Man of the match was Academy Tie #7, who is the one blocking Whisper above.

Good to see we're off to a good start with some excellent games. Well played everyone!

Nice photos Domfluff. The one vs Wobbly_Goggy looks like a head on game of chicken in the Death Star trench!

Don't forget, when calculating MOV, if you destroy all of someone's fleet it is worth 100 points. As BEAR WARS battles are a fight to the death the two MOV scores will always add up to 200.

Will the loser's MOV always equal the points they've killed as well?

e.g., 100-12 = 88 margin.

Winner = 100 + 88 = 188
Loser = 100 - 88 = 12

Skindog
Kath Scarlet (38) Opportunist (4) K4 Security Droid 3 = (45)
3x Binayre Pirate — Z-95 Headhunter (12) Feedback Array (2) = (14)
Binayre Pirate — Z-95 Headhunter = (12)

ScaredOfCrows
Soontir Fel (27) + Royal Guard TIE (0) + Push the Limit(3) + Stealth Device(3) + Autothrusters (2) = (35)
“Echo” (30) + Recon Specialist (3) + Veteran Instincts (1) + Advanced Cloaking Device (4) = (38)
Captain Yorr (24) + Intelligence Agent (1) + Tactical Jammer (1) = (27)

Kath and a pirate set up on one side opposite Yorr and Echo.Sooontir started in the centre facing a dense asteroid field in the middle of the board. 3 Bugzapper pirates set upon the far side.

Scarlet andthe pirate ran a straight joust with Echo and the shuttle. Kath and the Yorr traded fire dealing 4 damage to each other with some accurate shooting. Echo got a couple of hits through on the Firespray and Pirate put a crit on the Captain. Soontir threaded his way through the rocks looking to turn in towards the fray with the bugzappers giving chase.

2 turns later and Kath and the Shuttle bit the dust. Echo is an excitable lady and while celebrating taking the red bitch down forgot to engage her cloak and was taken out by a Z-95 at close range.

Soontir Fell vs 3 healthy(ish) Bugzappers and a dinged Jack Sparrow. Soontir was unable to turn in with confidence against the Z-95s as the feedback array bubble of doom would easily finish him. Fortunately for the Baron he was all but immune to their laser fire due to his huge pile of tokens, autothrusters and stealth device.

Skindog did a great job keeping pressure on the Baron and Soontir was only able to get shots off 1 in every 3/4 turns for the next 15 or so rounds. This was getting us nowhere and eventually the interceptor pilot made a move. He took two damage from the pirate's feedback arrays but was now 'out the back' and the ion tokens the pirates suffered from their zappers meant they lost formation.

After 3 1/2 hours of total game time Soontir finished of the last Pirate with only one hull point left on his Interceptor.

Well played Sam. That was too close!

SCCR wins 100 - 64

MOV: Skindog 64 SCCR 136.

Pilot of the Match: Baron. Soontir. Mother F**ckin' Fell!

Results added to table.

I only managed 1 game last night, before my back gave up :-( It was a great game with Howlrunner tanking like a boss for an hour before eventually being taken out by a plucky Z at range 3. Soontir bombed after Palob to take him out, before being wrecked by Kath's arse at Range 1

Vs Chal1977

Chall1977 - Empire
Soontir Fel + royal g tie + ptl + autothrusters + targeting comp (34)
Howlrunner + predator + targeting computer (23)
Academy pilot + targeting computer (14) * 3

Monk - Scum
Kath Scarlet Firespray-31 (38), Push the Limit (3), K4 Security Droid (3), Inertial Dampeners (1), Engine Upgrade (4) = (49)
Palob Godalhi HWK-290 (20), Blaster Turret (4), K4 Security Droid (3) =(27)
2 x Binayre Pirate (12)

ScaredOfCrows - Empire
Soontir Fel (27) + Royal Guard TIE (0) + Push the Limit(3) + Stealth Device(3) + Autothrusters (2) = (35)
“Echo” (30) + Recon Specialist (3) + Veteran Instincts (1) + Advanced Cloaking Device (4) = (38)

Gold Squadron Pilot (18) - Ion Cannon Turret (5), R2 Astromech (1), BTL-A4 Y-Wing (0) = (24)

The rebels stuck together, flying down the edge of the board then arcing into the middle. The Imperials split up and converged on the terrorists from 3 angles, Echo head on, Yorr from the side and Fell from the rear.

Echo, who thought she was the coolest girl in school, K-turned behind the Rebel formation only to find the savvy Y-Wings had also flipped their ships. She was caught at range two and took 10 red dice in the face losing both her shields. Only two turns later she again tried some fancy flying, this time getting blocked by a B-Wing ending at Range 1 of a Gold Squadon BTL-A4 who finished her.

The Shuttle faired no better and, after receiving heavy Ion fire, drifted off into the endless night.

Soontir had been following the conflict with muted interest only getting a few long range shots into the rear of the B-Wings. Echo and Yorr had managed to inflict some significant damage before departing but had not removed a ship from play.

Baron Soontir MF Fel vs a B and a Y both with 5 hitpoints, a B with 1 hitpoint and a Y with 3 remaining.

Soontir wins..

Couldn't believe Cai called those 2 moves with Echo. There was no way he should have been able to do that to her. 'Dont think, feel!'

Thunderchild - Rebels

Wes Janson (29) VI (1) R3A2 (2) Hull Upgrade
Keyan Farlander (29) Opportunist (4) Advanced Sensors (3) BWing E2 (1) C3P0 (3)
Bandit Squadron Pilot x2 (2)

Chall - Imperial

Soontir Fell (27) PTL (3) Auto Thrusters (2) Royal Guard Title (0) Targeting Computer (2)

Howlrunner (18) Targeting Computer (2) Predator (3)
Academy Pilot (12) Targeting Computer (2) x3

Battle Rep.

So initially I was going to be playing Monk and his token stealing crew and my plan was to do some token stripping myself allowing Keyan to utilise Opportunist and put the hammer down on Kath/Palob.
As it turned out the previous game with Chall was so intense that Monk had to call it and Chall kindly stepped up to face my squad.

I went down my right hand side slowly in a loose formation Wes flanked by the Bandits in front keeping Keyan a bit further off to the right to ensure he wasn't ganged up on. I moved slowly towards the asteroid/debris field hoping to draw Chall in, this didn't really work though as I gently banked in expecting to catch the academy pilots out Chall sent them blasting past my squad leaving me with just the odd pot shot against the trailing Howlrunner landing a crit and reducing him to ps0.

Meanwhile Soontir has been doing a great job of boosting his way behind my squad from his initial position, flanking away down my left hand side. Next turn most of Challs ties Kturn with one peeling off to my left, two (one being Howl) staying central and one moving to my right to join Soontir. The swarm has spread out but I'm now looking at multiple targets coming in from every angle making formation flying a lot tougher. I forget that Howl is ps0 and go slamming into him with Wes, I Kturn the rest of my force to try and bring guns to bear on Soontir. Thanks to target locks from previous rounds my Bandits take Howl out, Keyan meanwhile has barrel rolled into range one of an academy tie with no tokens on it I kick in Opportunist and roll five dice using the stress to convert the eyes into hits. The academy pilot takes two hits and two crits and is taken out.

Wes meanwhile is just flopping around the middle of the board going from one debris field to another. I try to link him up with Keyan and send the bandits after an academy tie flying up my left hand side, I Kturn Keyan using advanced sensors to lock onto Soontir. I was hoping for a shot but Chris boosts and barrel rolls Mr Fell out of my grasp. I tight turn the bandits back into the centre switching target from the other academy they were originally chasing to one that had been making its way back into the fight from Chris board edge, Keyan manages to get some damage in on Soontir range three through an asteroid and Wes re enters the game and helps the bandits finish a Tie. Chris next turn brings Soontir screaming round an asteroid looking to get a range one shot on Keyan, Wes shoots first however landing some heavy hits and taking Soontir down.

At this point the single remaining academy realising he's facing four ships decides to sound the retreat and Chall calls the game.

Mvp goes to Keyan for popping an academy pilot and managing to get some damage in on Soontir at range through a rock. Big thanks to Chall for taking Monks place.

Keyan is awesome. He's always going to be my Rebel big hitter.

Nightwing (Imperial)

Boba Fett (39) + HLC (7) + Proxy Mines (3) + Vet Instincts (1) + Navigator (3) + Slave 1 (0) + Anti Pursuit Lasers (2)= (55)
Darth Vader (29) + Assault Missiles (5) + Predator (3) + Stealth Device (3)= (40)

JayJayDee (Rebels)

Leebo (34) + Marksmanship(3) + HLC(7) + Kyle Katarn(3) + Outrider(5) + Experimental Interface(3) = 57
Biggs Darklighter(25) + R2-D2(4) = 29
Tala Squadron Pilot (13)

After Action Report

Deployment wise, Biggs and Leebo were set up directly opposite Fett down one side, Tala Squad Pilot and Vader facing off a little more centrally.

First turn the Imperials blasted forward, the Rebels a bit slower, Leebo and Fett jousting straight at each other. Fett chipped off Biggs shields before return fire from Leebo chipped all of Fett's 4 shields off in a single HLC shot (!). Tala Squad pilot then had to turn away from the action to get around an asteroid- Vader took advantage by turning towards Leebo and Biggs, and his assault missiles saw Biggs bite the dust turn 2.

Leebo then pulled an outrageous (and well executed) short move straight forward then barrel roll to finish nicely between Fett and an asteroid, neatly avoiding Fett's HLC arc. The barrel roll certainly foiled Vader, who promptly crashed into the side of Leebo, the oncoming Z95 behind him neatly pinging both his shields and stealth device (4 green blanks against 2 red hits!).

Fett's move enabled him to use his primary weapons on Leebo, courtesy of his Navigator, hitting more shields. Fett then had to turn back around, leaving him out of the action for a turn; Leebo turned around as well, but a K turn from Vader left him right in front of Leebo, taking off the last shields and scratching the hull. Leebo's long range HLC at Fett started eating into the hull- Tala squad pilot did nowt.

The Tala squad pilot turned after Fett, who made his way back towards the action. Vader barrel rolled and blasted the Tala squad pilot before Leebo took him out with a long range HLC shot.

Fett vs Leebo- Fett pursued Leebo into a corner of the board, closing the range (though taking more hits from the HLC) before being forced to fly over an asteroid (and of course taking a hit) due to some smart blocking by Leebo. Crucial moment came in the last turn; both ships had been chipped down to 1HP left apiece. Fett had to use his action to put out a Console fire, meaning he had no chance to focus or target lock. It all came down to the final HLC exchange- Fett shot first and luckily for me rolled 3 hits. Leebo was gone! We rolled and Leebo would have blasted Fett had Leebo had the chance.

Cracking game, very tight and went down to the wire. Great stuff.

Pilot of the match- probably a tie between Fett and Leebo. Both did really well, and there was nothing between them when they were 1v1 in the end game.

Final score- 100-40 win for the Imperials

Boba calmly extinguishes console fire with one hand while lining up a killshot with the other: Badass!

Great reports all round guys. Some dramatical sh*t going down on the outer rim!

Results added to table.

I had initiative and elected to move and shoot first. we set up in opposite corners with my 2 Z's and Palob just off centre. Kath bombed up the sidelines and my group of 3 turned away to force Wobbly to fly through the asteroids and split up. Long story short. Wobbly flew towards my Z's and Palob allowing Kath to fly around behind and start wrecking face.

Poor Palob dies for the second game in a row after having 5 target locks on it for 2 straight turns. Kath again was WOM (Woman of the Match) for 1 shotting 2 Z's in consecutive turns.

Heh, the follow up game was excellent! Not much to say about the league game - it was over in what, 10 minutes?
