Bear Wars II - Playoffs

Postby ScaredOfCrows » Wed Jun 10, 2015 10:53 am

With the conflict of Tatooine ending with an Imperial victory and Ig88 taking control of Bespin the gangsters of the outer rim attempt to fight back against the forces that could end their operations. Meanwhile, the Rebels seek to take advantage of the panic and avert the creation of a new galactic order, Imperial or droid.

Playoff fixtures

Bracket one Destructionof Mechis III
ScaredOfCrows vs Thunderchild ------------ Thunderchild Wins 138-62
Cai vs Vargas ----------------------------------- Cai Wins 138-62

Final: Thunderchild vs Cai-------------------------Cai Wins 167-33
3rd place playoff: ScaredOfCrows vs Vargas---Vargas Wins 200-0

Bracket two Fall of the Ylesia enterprise
Skindog vs JasonT---------------------------- Skindog Wins 186-14
Hymirl vs Monk

Bracket three Assault on Generis
Musketoon vs Domfluff
Loki vs Wobbly-Goggy

Bracket four Eriadu Way conflict
Nightwing vs Chall1977
JayJayDee vs Eski

The winner of the game will play the other winner from that bracket, and the loser will play the loser. This will determine the final standings of the Bear Wars 2015 season.

It would be great if all players in a bracket could sort out a date and time to meet and resolve the conflict in one evening or afternoon. I expect the outer rim battles to be concluded in the next couple of weeks.

Use this thread to talk smack and organise your playoff games! Go! Do!

Looks like me and James got the first play-off game in... Gonna post my result here; Ian, let me know if I need to repost in the Results post...

Cai vs James

I flew:
Wedge Antilles (29) - Push the Limit (3), R2 Astromech (1) = (33)
Luke Skywalker (28) - Marksmanship (3), ·R2D2 (4), ·Experimental Interface (3) - (38)
Jake Farrell (24) - Veteran Instincts (1), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Push The Limit (3), Chardaan Refit (-2), Autothrusters (2) = (28)

James flew:
IG88B (36) + Stay on target (2) + Advanced sensors (3) + Inertial dampeners (1) + Autothrusters (2) + Mangler cannon (4) + IG2000 (0) =48
IG88C (36) + Stay on target (2) + Advanced sensors (3) + Inertial dampeners (1) + Autothrusters (2) + Heavy laser cannon (7) + IG2000 (0) =51
(His bloody Nationals list, I might add!!!!)

This game was a tough one from the outset. Unfortunately, I remember little details as I was tired and hungry when I played, and spent all of my mental energy second guessing these b*****d IGs. xD

What I do remember is Wedge unsurprisingly dying first, but not before scoring the crit on IG88-C that removes a Secondary Weapon. Luke and Jake took him down a few rounds later. Jake (having list his shields earlier on) then flew on to a rock, suffered the "roll a dice and suffer the damage" crit, which James then went and rolled a hit for, leaving Luke to tackle a mostly damage IG88-B all on his own. Some clever K-turns, and plenty of regenerated shield points later, and I dragged the last IG down.

Victory to Cai.

138-61 (I lost Wedge and Jake, but killed both IGs).

MotM goes to R2D2 again. A shoutout does need to go to James' attack dice. Despite modifications aplenty (gunner-bot, target locks, focuses), you can count on one hand the number of times he scored more than 1 or two hits.

Luke, Wedge, and Jake: cleaning up the galaxy, one scumbag at a time. Gary or Ian, I'm coming for you next!

your total points is one off Cai; you've got 138-61, it should add up to 200.

Congrats on the win!!!

R2-bloody-D2! I reckon I would have killed Luke three to four times over of it wasn't for him. Definitely motm.

I only realised after reading this that it was only wedge with the R2 unit. I kept on trying to predict Luke's movement on the basis that he had all green 1 & 2s which is why I wasn't expecting you to K-turn so much! This is particularly dumb of me considering I was reminding you to take the extra shield when you pulled a green! Special...

Quality game though and the right result all things considered.

Hey Chaps,

Do you want to all try and get together (one evening?) and play our Play-Off matches? I'm pretty busy this week but could hopefully do one evening next week?

Sam Vs Jason.

Me;
4x Binyare Pirates w Feedback Array
2x Black Sun Soldiers w Inertial Dampeners
1x Black Sun Soldier w hot shot blaster

Jason;
2x Y-wing w Ion Cannon Turret
1x B-Wing w Ion Cannon, Fire Control System
1x A-Wing w Refit
1x Z95

I set up in the middle, Jason to my right. Jason came straight forwards, I turned right then left to meet him in the joust. LOTS of bumping going on and the lasers started flying, combat rounds 2 & 3 saw the destruction of Jason's Z95 & a Y-Wing for the return of one of my Z's, Jason's ships just couldn't get any damage out, the B-Wing only managing 1 hit per attack even with TL & focus!!! The Z Swarm already had the upper hand and continued to lay down the punishment, the final nail was when at R3 through a rock a Z95 rolls a hit & a crit against a Y-wing on 3 hull & kills it...... then it was just a matter of time mopping up the A-Wing & B-wing.

Not much Jason could have done this game, the Z Swarm was consistent if not spectacular in its damage dealing whilst Jason's ships couldn't manage any solid attacks apart from with the odd Ion shot that was over-kill considering it only does 1 damage.

100-14 to me.

I have heard that in war haste can be folly, but have never seen delay that was wise.” – Sun Tzu.

The Lists:

Thunderchild.

Wes Janson – Veteran Instincts, HullUpgrade R3A2.

Lt Blount – Veteran Instincts, Assault Missiles.

Blue Squadron Pilot – Advanced Sensors, Ion Cannon.

Bandit Squadron Pilot.

ScaredofCrows.

Soontir Fel – Push The Limit, Royal Guard Title, Stealth Device, Autothrusters.

Echo – Veteran Instincts, Recon Specialist, Advanced Cloaking Device.

Captain Yorr – Intelligence Agent, Tactical Jammer.

So…yea, was not expecting to be writing this battle report up that’s for sure! Played an absolutely stonking game of X-wing against Holmes last night, here's how it went down.

My plan for this game was simple, kill Soontir Fel as quickly as I possibly could, we all know how skilled Holmes is when it comes to flying the Baron so my plan was to come in hard and fast close the distance as quickly as possible and hopefully catch him and stress him with Wes.

With that in mind I set my asteroids up in a tight group in the centre of the board and Holmes did the same, the result was a dense tight cluster of asteroids that I hoped I could use to cover my squad as it moved up hard to engage the Imperials.

My squad set up in a loose pinwheel formation with the Bwing being placed towards the middle of the board, The shuttle was placed at a diagonal from upper left corner to lower right, Echo nestled in beside the shuttle facing the opposite way and Soontir took position away from them across to my right hand side of the board.

Fist turn the Rebels put the pedal to the metal and blast forward four including the Bwing! The shuttle remains in the corner and Echo moves out in front of it probably to limit its movement next turn. Soontir moves up towards the asteroid field, no shots fired.

Rebels blast forward again the X and Z's doing another four straight the Bwing takes an easy one and turns gently into the asteroid field. My hope was the use the Bwing with advanced sensors to navigate the asteroid field and try and deny the oncoming Soontir of movement options.

The shuttle just misses Echo and so completes it move facing straight down my left hand board edge Echo de-cloaks and takes a tight turn facing into the asteroid field, Soontir moves on up and sets the Bwing in his sights, shots are fired and the Baron gets three natural hits which the Bwing fails to evade, Echo lends her firepower completely stripping the Bwing of its shields! The B tries to Ion Soontir but it fails.

Next turn I attempt to skirt the asteroid in front of me by using advanced sensors on the B-wing this works but the following soft one bank is too tight and I park the thing on a rock (great!) The rest of my squad pull a tight left into the field with the Bandit focusing and Lt Blount grabs that all important target lock on Soontir.

Looking to take advantage of the floundering Bwing Echo closes the gap to range one looking for that kill shot, I'm feeling like an absolute muppet at this point for handing Holmes the Bwing so early into the game. It's not all doom and gloom though as putting the Bwing on a rock prevents Soontir from completing his move and he flies forwards and bumps with no actions!

Wes shoots at the Baron and whilst not managing to land a hit uses R3 to give the interceptor some stress, Lt Blount lets his assault missiles fly but thanks to autothrusters the Baron dodges the missile however the explosion damages his stealth device and the nearby echo loses a shield. Echo hammers the Bwing at range one but somehow it survives on one hull.

I think the shuttle also got a shot on the Bandit somewhere at this point removing its shields but I'm not 100% on that. Just when we think it's all over the Bandit pilot steps up and manages to land a crit onto Soontir.

The Bwing manages to pull a 2k off the rock and behind Soontir, Echo de-cloaks back towards my lower left hand side of the asteroid field. The bandit takes an easy three into the field but it's too hard and I manage to park another ship on a rock (mad skillz). The shuttle moves up closing in on the Bwing, Lt Blount takes an easy one into the field and Soontir peels away to my right carrying his stress with him (He was double stressed at this point but I can't quite recall how) Wes clears his stress taking an easy one towards the middle of the board.

Wes fires at Echo removing a shield and giving the phantom a stress token (No combat re-cloak for you) Soontir has no shot, Lt Blount adds another point of damage to Echo and Echo fires back at Blount in return who manages to shrug off the incoming fire and the shuttle lays into the Bwing and annihilates it.

The Bandit moves to block the shuttle and succeeds but takes damage from moving off the asteroid, Soontir vectors back into the centre of the board clearing his stress and boosting to close the gap and come up behind Wes.

Echo moves forward two clearing the stress, Lt Blount manages to pull a 3k over Echo and Wes moves up one bumping with the Phantom.

Wes just about has an angle on the shuttle and gets to work removing some shields, Soontir responds to this by hammering Wes from behind causing damage, Echo has no shot and so Lt Blount takes his shot and manages to get the last point of damage through and with that the Phantom is gone.

The bandit manages to 3k behind the shuttle which decides to put move forward one, Lt Blount moves up one and Wes bugs out doing an easy three in the hopes of escaping from the Baron. Mr Fel wanting to avoid any collisions moves across the asteroid field and sets his sights on the crippled Z95. Soontir takes the Bandit down with ease whilst Lt Blount makes a hard choice and chooses to shoot the oncoming shuttle rather than try for a lucky pot shot at a range three Soontir, he manages to remove the shuttles remaining shields.

The shuttle moves on a soft bank one through the asteroid field, Lt Blount pulls another 3k and hops over the front of the shuttle, Soontir rounds a rock and is unable to barrel roll behind the stressed Blount due to an asteroid.  Wes Janson pulls a 4k and lines the incoming shuttle up in his sights. He shoots and the shuttle takes damage but it's not enough to finish it. Seeing Wes in trouble Lt Blount takes a shot and damages it but the shuttle hangs on in there and fires taking Wes to one hull!

Shuttle moves forward one next turn, Lt Blount follows and focuses, Soontir comes screaming in from the side he may only have one hull left but he is still a force to be reckoned with, Wes moves up one and proceeds to fail to finish of the shuttle. Soontir blasts away at a still full health Lt Blount who elects to save his focus and loses a shield. Blount saves Wes by taking the range one shot and nailing the shuttle before it can finish old One Hull off.

Lt Blount Pulls another 3k hoping that despite the stress he will still get a shot in on Soontir, The Baron takes an easy two through the asteroids boosts into range one of Lt Blount and then in an attempt to arc dodge the incoming Wes does a barrel roll to my right. Wes makes his one forward moves and I watch as I land right in front of Soontir (amazing flying by Iain there) I'm pretty sure it's game over for Wes but we check the arcs and by the smallest of margins Wes actually has a shot and he has a focus!

Wes takes the shot and manages to use the focus to get three hits on Soontir, the Barons ship can't take the punishment and erupts into a glorious fireball ending the game.

An incredibly intense game that I honestly did not expect to win. My eagerness to go all out for Soontir meant that I handed Iain my Bwing on a plate after trying to outmanoeuvre him in the asteroid field. Playing in amongst the asteroids was risky as my poor bandit pilot found out but it gave my guys a bit of protection against Echo's de-cloaking at least.

Man of the match has to be Lt Blount, Removing the Barons stealth device, damaging and then finishing off both Echo and the Shuttle and going pretty much unscathed the entire match! Someone give that guy a medal!

Also yet another special mention for droid of the match, the one and only R3A2! Without this guy I would never have been able to put the pressure on Soontir and Echo with the additional unwanted stress, stressing out Soontir gave me a turn or two without harassment and stressing Echo and stopping the re-cloak allowed Lt Blount to take her out.

Final MOV.

Well played G!

A violent, overly close game.

Gary hanging the B wing out to dry so early on was enough bait to tempt me away from the stress safety of Yorr. I thought If he were down a ship before his squad could engage, Soontir and Echo could just roll through Wes and two Zs...

After dealing with an autohitting assault missle, 3 rounds of R3-A2 stress, the B-Wing that was supposed to be dead blocking Soontir and Gary's success in keeping Echo in arc, I was regretting more than just leaving the Shuttle behind!

Amazin' report as always. That's exactly what happened.

Vargas vs ScaredOfCrows

Vargas

IG88 B&C Stay on target, advanced sensors, inertial dampeners, auto-thrusters, B with mangler, C with HLC.

SOC

Soontir Fel, Carnor Jax, royal guard tie all with:

PTL
Stealth device
Autothrusters
Royal guard tie title

The aggressors set up facing sideways and turned in aggressively and boosted forward along the left hand side of the board. Jax and the RGT tentatively moves forward whilst Fel made an aggressive 5 move forward in attempt to flank the aggressors. Fel was able to arc dodge the IG88C but couldn't avoid IG88Bs arc and suffered a crit for it - overlapping an obstacle causes a damage. Crucially it also meant that he lost his stealth device. All of this happened on the 1st turn.

IG88 turned up the heat on Fel going all out against him on the second turn managing to place another crit on him - reducing his agility by one - and leaving him on one health. The RGT and Jax were able to chip away at IG88B and take a few shields off of him.

Fel was left at the bottom corner of the board and IG88B saw an opportunity to k-turn in and block him taking his final hit and lining up a free shot on Jax who was blocked by IG88C. Fel dudes by the block but no more damage occurred.

IG88 decided to focus entirely on the RGT as it moved ahead of him allowing themselves to adapt their moves and focus fire it into oblivion. This worked but at the expense of pushing IG88B down to a single hull point and a crust that meant he could suffer a hit following a red move. Jax was untouched whilst IG88C had only lost two shields. This could go wrong very easily. Jax is a bigger problem to the aggressors than Fel is. IG88B acted as bait and moved conservatively whilst IG88C moved into position. Jax went in for the killer move and IG88B got lucky by rolling three natural evades leaving Jax in range two of a HLC and tokenless. The HLC rolled 4 natural hits (a recurring theme for the game) whilst Jax fluffed his roll and was destroyed. IG88B limped home battered and fortunate to be alive.

Cracking game as always against Ian's interceptors.

"I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was..." Jason Paige, the original Pokemon theme song.

Cai vs Gary for first place in bear Wars II.

Cai:
Wedge Antilles (29) - Push the Limit (3), R2 Astromech (1) = (33)
Luke Skywalker (28) - Marksmanship (3), ·R2D2 (4), ·Experimental Interface (3) - (38)
Jake Farrell (24) - Veteran Instincts (1), A-Wing Test Pilot (0), Push The Limit (3), Chardaan Refit (-2), Autothrusters (2) = (28)

Gary:
Wes Janson (29) Veteran Instincts (1) R3A2 (2) Hull Upgrade (3) = (35)
Keyan Farlander (29) Opportunist (4) Advanced Sensors (3) BWing/E2 (1) C3P0 (3) = (40)
2 x Bandit Squadron Pilot (12)

I suck at battle reports. Sorry I don't have Gary's flair. :P

The asteroids were set up fairly symmetrically in the middle, in a sort of >> formation, with the point facing Gary.

Gary set up in a loose pinwheel formation, with the Zs at the front, all off to my right hand side. I set up Jake flanking to my left, Wedge and Luke heading up the middle in an attempt to draw Gary in to the rocks.

The vague overall plan in my head was to kill Wes as soon as possible, then Keyan, then the two Zs. With that in mind, I advanced Luke and Wedge fairly slowly, while Jake rocketed off up the board. Gary's pinwheel advanced even slower than me, cautious to keep Wes alive. After a couple of turns, the pinwheel turned in to engage. One of the Bandits misjudged where Luke was going, so missed out on the opportunity to block him by not a lot (a quarter of a base maybe?). Wedge and Jake turned in to face the oncoming ships. The opening turn of shooting saw Wedge dead, but also saw Wes dead as well! Target lock and focus for everyone (Marksmanship on Luke) saw maximum hits on Wes. One down, three to go!

The next few turns were fairly bumpy with Jake pinging a shield off of Keyan, and Luke doing the same to a Bandit. Next turn, Jake wound up in front of Keyan. This was a mistake - I'd spent my tokens stripping a couple more shields off, which left me ripe for an Opportunistic 5 dice attack at range 1. Jake escaped with 1 hull left! While Jake was working up excuses to his crew chief for the extreme damage, Luke wrecked one of the Bandits. 2 down.

Try as he might from there, Keyan and the Bandit just could not get a shot off at Luke or Jake. Jake jetted off in an attempt to not be shot at, but Luke was well enough positioned that he wasn't shot at again. A turn or so later, Jake came back around a rock, flew up behind Keyan, focus, boost, target lock, all 3 hit (after modifications - my dice weren't that generous), and Keyan was left to explain to Luke why him and 3P0 were floating home. Gary called it there.

I killed all 100, Gary killed 33. MoV: 167-33

Thanks for saying I won because everyone took sub-optimal (read: S***) lists, Sam. :D

I managed to beat James' top-16-at-Nationals BroBot list with my All-Stars, so I'd say I deserve a little more credit... :P

You know full well thats not what I was saying :P I classed your list in the exact same category ;)

I meant it as a positive.....

Also the 3 high PS rebels list is actually really good against Bro Bots (especially if the stress droid is involved), it just loses hard to turreted big ships and so isn't very good for regular tournaments.

Rebel Aces are consistently the toughest match up I've come across for the bro-bots. I might snatch the occasionally hard fought win but more often than not I'll lose.
