Should I finish rebasing my army?

Postby Bueno » Thu Oct 29, 2015 10:53 pm

So I started rebasing my previously unfinished ogres onto rounds, I'm coming to the end of a commission and looking for a new project.

before deciding whether or not to finish the ogres I wanted to see if anyone is playing AOS as the forum seems dead and I never see any games being played?

I'd play, game seems no better/no worse than many others. Just a point in life where playing anything seems beyond me just now.

I am playing AoS Ben. I left some of my old WoCh models on squares and currently I'm painting and modeling the rest of my WoCh collection in AoS style. Ogres will stay on squares, I need an army in case if 9th age will become popular. Same as Dave, a lot is going on in my life at atm, being a dad, manic time at work, not much time left for hobby. Im going to Reading in 2 weeks time and then to Cardiff in Dec, so yeah, AoS is very much alive, maybe not locally, but I guess this will change when GW release more new factions/miniatures. I can give you a game at BIG if u want, Im available on Monday's, Tuesday's, Friday's or Saturday's after 4pm, just let me know in advance.

I'm playing AoS Ben but leaving my elves on squares to hedge my bets.

I'm doing AoS mate.

Perhaps we could get a night were we could all get together to have a few games.

Ive played AoS, wrote a strong list and haven't lost a game. Seems too simple and the fact we have to create our own points system I just don't know if I like it.

I'm hoping 9th kicks off. Ive been keeping an eye on it recently and it seems positive. Personally I wouldn't rebase anything. Squares mean you can use in either game.

Feeling a lot more positive about AoS after Warfare - only my first game v Dan Ford's Tomb Kings was one sided and that trick has been the revised Pool Comp/SCGT comp.

The other 4 games were in the balance until the final moves, with 4, 12, 18 and 8 points gained respectively. Given me a lot to plan in terms of list design going forwards and I think the Pool comp will continue to be refined to exclude the sillier things (not sure what won (Brets I think) but he was 30 points ahead of the rest of the field).

Any tournament in which Russ wins his fave trophy the wooden spoon is always a good one!

I'm with Rob and Warren on this (everyone knows I hate AoS), I'd keep them square for versatility purposes (could play AoS, 9th age, WFB 8th, & Kings of War without any issues then). It seems the former Fantasy battle crowd has split with virtually 50% in favour of AoS and 50% choosing the massed battle format (8th, 9th age, and KoW). ETC's support of 9th age can only see the support for this system grow - in competitive play terms at least (I can't speak of the competitive support of AoS/KoW as I know very little about that aspect of said systems). Last I was able to get out for a game there was plenty of fantasy gaming going on (admittedly the current ruleset of 9th age wasn't released at the time so it was mostly 8th & KoW). I admit I have only really seen Mark (and his one opponent) playing AoS (but I am basing that on games seen being played on a Tuesday night or the occasional weekend visit to BIG) but I'm sure there are others (my personal experience has seen more people playing anything but AoS but that doesn't necessarily reflect the bigger picture)
I know Matt is currently running a Kings of War league that will end towards the end of the year and James is looking to start a 9th Age campaign in the new year so if anything I think that strengthens the case for leaving everything on squares. There's never been so many options for what to do with your mini range!
Also it may be worth pointing out that with the announcement that the specialist games are making a return. Warhammer Quest could soon be a further option (so keep them square or at least hedge your bets a while longer). I hope this is helpful

Well it looks like most future AoS tournaments aren't making you re-base your army but you will get modelling points for having them on round.
I'm doing all my Tomb kings after Christmas now, been researching how to do resin bases as going to make my own :?

I'll just slip in my 2 pence worth here... You have your Beastmen on squares ready for any rank and file game that survives, so if I were you I would put the Ogres on rounds. If you ask most of the serious painters, they will say that the models look better on rounds. In fact, most of the good serious painters have always put their models on round bases for painting competitions because they look better.

If you want to show off your painting and modelling skills to the max, put them on rounds.

Ultimately Ben its your choice.

PS despite what some people will tell you, AOS is a great game.

warhammer quest was a tile based map, you could put them on any shape of base and it would still work...

Thanks again for the replies guys.

I've got no interest in 9th age as I just can't see a future for it with out support and new blood coming in, though I do appreciate the time/effort put into it and wish them every success. I just can't see myself picking it up unless that is the only way I can get a fantasy game in in the future.

I'm defiantly gonna go ahead and debase the ogres( though they are hardly to my best standard I'm afraid Russ :( ) and will start a new project (dwarfs) to keep KOW (which I am very much enjoying) fresh for me, I do love the beasts but staring at that same army for years is getting tiresome.

Keep the 1st weekend of March free guys also as it looks like the Blacksun Boys are looking to run aSCGT warmup down in Weymouth, is definately be up for this if it comes off.

There is also this coming out next month:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dragon-Rampant- ... on+rampant

By all accounts it has an interesting unit activation mechanic based on a pass or fail roll. It might fill a spot somewhere between KoW (for people who don't like not removing dead models) and AoS (for people who like armies with "official" points values).
