All about that base

Postby Wiggles » Wed Jan 11, 2017 5:29 pm

Alright, I'm starting to think quite a lot about how I want to proceed here.

The first thing in going to do is test run some different basing designs, trying to work out the right colour of flock/dirt. I'm hoping to make it look like it's night or twighlight rather than dead earth.

What I'd like your opinions on is this.

I'm planning to individually base models on 25mm round slottas so I can use them for other things.

I plan to construct unit bases out of two bits of hardboard. A thin piece for the base and a piece almost as thick as the slottas base for the top. Holes will be cut in the upper layer to provide places for the models.

I'll texture the top with texturing gloop and paint/flock to match the minis.

Now to get a quick, easy, quality cut I'll probably get a laser cutter workshop to the cutting, I've already found some in Bristol.

Does this sound like massive overkill? Can you think of a different way to achieve the same result?

Quite a few people do the same sort of thing.

You can buy KoW sized bases with pre-cut holes. Various companies do them - www.warbases.co.uk for one.

Don't know how things pan out cost wise if you've already found a source for the laser cutting.

As long as you bear in mind the 50%+1 rule its all good.

(i.e for a regiment of infantry, 11 models on a base that resembles a diorama is fine.)

Round bases in square movement trays is a good idea but im not sure what else you could be using them for.

Thanks. I was vaguely aware of their being a ranked system like that. I was hoping for something a little more ragged. Tbh the price is good though, probably significantly better than I'd be able to get making my own.

I could cover the "spare" holes with gloop, but I suspect the remaining holes would still be a bit too regularly placed for what I have in mind.

My understanding is that it's for Mantic Tournaments only and quiet frankly I'm going to be doing whatever I can with whatever I've got. I don't plan on going to any tournaments Mantic or otherwise.

I plan to use them for d&d/frostgrave/whatever else I fancy.

Well really it's to stop people doing dickish things like placing a single zombie on a big tray and calling it a horde. If your not going to tournaments and just looking to play games here and there then it's not a big issue, and it sounds like you'll be doing something snazzy with the base which will look good.

I hope so. Either it'll be excellent or just a F*** shambles. We'll see...

Edit: seriously? Auto censors? What the hell?

Fair enough!

Its worth signing up to Kings of War Fanatics on Facebook as people are forever posting multibased units that may provide you with some ideas.

Obviously if going below the recommended 50%+1 you'll want to make the base look lively. 11 models on a base for 20 looks a bit bare otherwise.

Oh and obviously you'll want to consider unit sizes when making bases as thats the important thing. You can see what unit sizes are for the models you have....

This is the army building tool everyone uses and provides the unit sizes for you.

There is plenty of cheap undead stuff around, plus generic dragons and monsters you could use.

Cheers, good to see easy army going strong!

On that note, what's the minimum size people would be willing to fight?

I'd be happy to play 1000 points, but it doesn't take too long so I'd plan in a couple of games if I was you.

Ok, I'll aim for that.

On a different note your cats look scarily like my recently deceased ones, so much so - down to the facial expression - that if my hometown were anywhere near here I'd accuse you of resurrecting them for your own foul purposes...
