Operation Round/Oval

Postby Kaseliegth » Mon Jan 04, 2016 10:46 pm

Ok I've got to get my tomb kings onto round / oval bases by mid Feb for age of Sigmar

I had them on Sqaure resin bases before but there's no one manufacturer which does all the base sizes needed in a style I like so this is a thread on my progress.

I'm going to make my own resin bases from scratch this way I can just recast them as and when I need the sizes.

The plan was to put together 3 chariot size bases in the style I like together and then take copies of them and cut them down to size.

Image

After thinking about it some more. This way was going to be a lot more costly with doing the rubber moulds and resin.

I decided that I would make my own master copies and then take moulds from them.

This was with just slate and sand filled in the gaps

Image

Image

To try and keep the sand in place I sprayed varnished it.

Ok note to self.

The rubber silicone mould doesn't wash out so don't use your mothers Pyrex measuring jug to mix it up in

Ok going to to need to be quicker at pouring the resin but it's pretty cool

And then the bases. They have pulled out the sand lost from the templates

Ok so they have turned out ok but the gaps between the stones are deeper than I wanted.

I want it to look like a stone slab path which has been left in the desert so the gaps would be filled with sand so going to re-mould them.

Thinking about it I should of just done a tester mould and not wasted all that silicone rubber mould.

To be honest mate they look really good - especially considering this was your first time at it.

Itll be harder to notice those deep cracks once a model is on the base and you've done a paint job on it.

You're right about the test run - but hindsight is a wonderful thing.

Agree that look decent to me. In any event, putting a little extra sand on them would hardly be a major task.

How much did the rubber/resin combo set you back?

I've then added the sand

I've sealed the sand a lot better this time with 2 covers of watered down PVA glue

They turned out a lot better. Was way better with the PVA Glue sealing them in. Had no sand left in the mould at all.

I then mixed up some resin and started casting my bases

Can't believe how quick you can get these bumped out. As the resin only takes 20 mins to set you can get a load done in an evening.

Started painting them as well now

Image

I was trying to make the sand a bit of a different colour so the base stood out a bit. Basically so it didn't look dull and people looked at my bases than my models lol

I think it's turned out really well I've been really surprised how quick and easy it is to do.

Going to start on my Monster, Monster Calvary and Scorpions bases yet.

Got 4 weeks left to finish it all up
