HELP: Painting on top of chrome

Postby ObviousPlayer » Mon Aug 08, 2016 11:13 am

Hello all,

I need some advice. I've sprayed a couple of Stormcast Eternals with a chrome effect spray from B&Q. They look lovely. Super shiny. However, I can't then get any other paint to stick to the chrome. Imperial primer and Vallejo grey primer just slides off and pools. It's like trying to paint on glass. Also, washes behave very strangely and don't flow into the recesses properly. My best bet thus far has been to put down two or three coats of a GW base paint which isn't really ideal.

Can anyone recommend a primer or other solution to get paint to stick to parts that I don't want to be chrome?

Many thanks

It's hard to give advise without knowing more about the paint etc but could you 'key' the area? In other words can you sand/rough up the chrome, giving the next layers something to stick to?

Otherwise all I can suggest is to mask areas before spraying, using masking tape or masking fluid.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.

Thanks Stu.

There's no real chance of keying it. I like your other suggestion through. Will order some masking fluid.

Some sort of varnish may work - Matt will be the best but will heavily dull the shine, gloss is the opposite; satin may work.

As Mark posted varnish should help. also using oil based paints should stick to it but it will take weeks to paint it.
